If you live in North Herts, there are so many gyms, fitness classes, swimming pools, parks and sports clubs that there’s almost no excuse for not getting active. So in order to make it even easier for you to get involved in the right sport for you, we’ve put together a guide to where you can keep fit in the region.
In the park
This summer, the Get Active North Herts initiative are organising exercise sessions in parks around the area. For as little as £1 a session, you could try out buggycise, cycling, yoga, boot camp, zumba, cardio tennis and keep fit for the whole family. The website has details of sessions in parks near you.
North Herts District Council publish lists of the sports and recreation facilities available for everyone on their website. Here is a list of the children’s playgrounds, football pitches, tennis courts and BMX tracks near you.
North Herts Leisure Centres
The leisure centre at Hitchin has a Swimming Centre with a 25m indoor heated swimming pool, indoor toddler pool and a 50m heated outdoor pool (open in the summer months). The centre runs swimming lessons for both adults and children. In addition, the Archers Health & Fitness Club has a large, well-equipped technogym, steam room, and sauna.
Royston Leisure Centre has a 25m 6-lane swimming pool and a gym with interactive viewing screens on the equipment, and as well as group exercise classes. It also has a sports hall equipped for a range of sports including badminton, basketball, 5-a-side football, trampolining, and indoor hockey.
The swimming pool at North Herts Leisure Centre in Letchworth has a tropical wave pool and water flume. The Centre also has a 60 station gym which runs classes and personal training sessions. In the sports hall, you can try out activities like football, gymnastics, trampolining, judo, badminton and squash.
Letchworth Outdoor Swimming Pool is a 50m heated pool which is surrounded by a grassy sunbathing area. Open between May and September, it also has a toddler pool, and runs adult classes and family activities.
Stevenage Swimming Centre has a 33m pool with diving area as well as a children’s pool. They have swimming lessons for kids, aquacise for grown-ups and inflatable fun sessions every weekend. The Methesis Spa is part of the centre and has a steam room, sauna and relaxation areas, as well as exercise classes and beauty therapies.
Sailing in North Herts
Fairlands Valley Park has an 11-acre sailing lake where you can mess around on dinghies, canoes, kayaks and try out a spot of windsurfing.
There are dozens of sports clubs around North Herts covering activities as diverse as netball, football, rugby, basketball, cricket, golf, athletics, tennis, bowls, BMX, hockey, fencing, and boccia. A list of all the sports clubs is on the NHDC website.
North Herts is keen to promote sports for people with disabilities and has therefore published a Hertfordshire Disability Sport Club Directory. Hertfordshire FA also has information about inclusive opportunities in youth and adult football clubs.
